Assalaamu Aleikum everyone and happy 2018. The end of 2017 saw a lot of shake up and talk in Muslim world as it relates to cryptocurrency as we had at least 2 prominent scholars give fatwas (legal opinions based on Islamic law) saying that Bitcoin, and cryptocurrency as whole, is haram. Today I would like to take a closer look at one of those fatwas. Insha'Allah we will look at the fatwa given by Sheikh Assim Al Hakeem as I will be providing commentary on his reasoning behind his fatwa. Are there areas of sincere misunderstanding by our scholars with this new technology? Are there legitimate concerns that our scholars mention that we should heed? Please do read on to find out more.
